A Diary, a Walking Stick & Deep Trust
Picture rural Sri Lanka several decades ago. Families rarely socialised beyond their village, and young men and women had few socially acceptable ways to meet. The Magul Kapuwa filled the gap.
Part broker, part diplomat, part walking database — he walked from house to house with a walking stick and worn diary. Sitting for long conversations, he built an intimate map of his community: lineage, character, dowries, and auspicious horoscopes (nekatha), bringing two households together with quiet discretion.
